Over the years I have chatted with my friend Ang at various gatherings about her dad, who was a professional goalkeeper. His career lasted through the sixties into 1970, playing for Brighton, Mansfield, Notts Forest, Newcastle, Aldershot and Wales.His career definetly has its standout moments namely playing against Pele in front of 230,000 people at the Maracana Stadium and most importantly George Best.

I originally thought I would like to do a painting of him. I looked out and got this heavily posed picture of him when he played for Mansfield

I listened through an interview that appeared on Stagsonline(Stags being Mansfield's nickname -nothing dodgy)during which I found out about his international career and that the best player he had played against was George Best. He joined Aldershot for the 1970 season and played his last 16 matches of his career there. While they were in the fourth division, The Shots (Club nickname-not some militaristic organisation) had some lucky cup draws namely Liverpool and Man Utd.

Its the Man Utd George Best Aldershot/Len walker connection I love.

The first football match I went to was Man Utd v Crystal Palace at Old Trafford just a month after the Aldershot match.

George Best because he was my favourite-documented elsewhere on this blog.

Aldershot as when I was a football reporter for Clubcall,between 1988 and 1992, one of the clubs I did a daily news bulletin and match commentaries for was Aldershot. This involved many trips down the A3 to interview players such as Adrian Randall(not a great talker), Steve Claridge ( a great talker in fact he has made a career out of it) Charlie Henry and Steve Wignall.It also involved talking to the best fella I ever met in football, the manager Len Walker. I was a rubbish reporter with not much incisive football knowledge but Len was a true gent always willing to do an interview even after they had been beaten 8-0 at home by Sheffield Wednesday,giving me my favourite quote ever 'They were better than us' The Recreation Ground was my favourite place to be. It fits in with the story as well as Len Walker was in the side that played against Man Utd.

So it all comes together Ang's Dad,George Best,and Len Walker.

So I want to get a photo of the Aldershot Man Utd match as a source. I reckon it will be in the Man Utd vs Portsmouth match programme Oct 7 1970 or Aldershot subsequent home game. The search begins.........
